Metastatic breast cancer commonly occurs in bone, in which it disrupts the balance between osteoclast and osteoblast activity. It causes osteoclasts to become overactive, resulting in more bone being broken down than replaced. Osteocytes are cells embedded in the calcified matrix of the bone that regulate osteoclast formation and activity through signaling molecules in response to mechanical stimuli. The aim of my project was to investigate the effect of mechanical loading on bone metastasis. Understanding this mechanism may lead to the development of new therapeutics and improve lives.
